Why Technical Riding Socks Matter

The Story Behind Cool Horse Socks

Finding a good riding sock used to be surprisingly difficult.

Most socks available at the time were either too thick, slipped down inside boots, or became uncomfortable after a few hours riding. Like many riders, I often ended up borrowing my dad's sports socks instead, simply because they were more breathable and supportive.

That small frustration eventually led to the idea behind Cool Horse Socks.

From the beginning, the goal wasn’t to create just another colourful riding sock. The goal was to design a technical riding sock that genuinely worked inside tall boots.

Designing a Proper Riding Sock

Riding places unique demands on your feet and lower legs. Socks need to stay comfortable for hours while managing heat, friction and movement inside a fitted riding boot.

That’s why every pair of Cool Horse Socks is designed as a proper technical riding sock, combining performance features with everyday comfort.

Each pair includes:

• a Coolmax footbed to wick moisture away and keep feet dry
• breathable mesh ventilation
• reinforced heel and toe for durability
• support through the foot and ankle
• a lightweight construction designed specifically for riding boots

These small details make a huge difference during long days at the yard, training sessions and competitions.

British-Made Technical Riding Socks

Cool Horse Socks are proudly made in Britain, working with specialist manufacturers who understand technical knitwear.

Producing socks in the UK allows us to maintain a close relationship with the manufacturing process and ensure the quality and performance riders expect from a technical riding sock.

It also reflects something that has always been important to us as a family business — designing products with care, attention to detail and long-term durability.

Designed by Riders, for Riders

Cool Horse Socks started as a family idea when Tim Riley struggled to find socks that stayed comfortable and supportive for his daughters (me) inside riding boots.

Rather than compromising, we decided to design our own.

Since 2009, the focus has remained the same: create riding socks that combine technical performance with designs riders actually enjoy wearing.

From foxes and flamingos to classic competition colours, the aim has always been simple — make socks riders genuinely want to wear every day.

When Good Ideas Start to Spread

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Over the years we’ve started to see more riding socks appearing with similar technical features — breathable mesh panels, reinforced feet and supportive construction.

And honestly, we welcome it.

When we first started designing Cool Horse Socks, technical construction in riding socks wasn’t particularly common. Our focus was simply to build a sock that worked properly inside riding boots.

Seeing more brands adopt similar ideas today reinforces something we believed from the start — riders care about comfort, performance and thoughtful design.

And if that thinking is becoming more widespread across the industry, we’ll take it as a compliment.

Because at Cool Horse Socks, that approach has been part of the design since 2009.

Built for Long Days Riding

At Cool Horse Socks we believe riding socks should do more than look good.

They should stay comfortable inside tall boots, keep your feet dry, and provide support throughout the day.

That’s exactly what we set out to create — and it’s still the focus today.

Because riding socks shouldn’t just look good.

They should work.
