FROM THE YARD · CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS
A yard Secret Santa, a thank-you for your instructor or a present for someone horse-mad. Start with what they like, what they use and what needs replacing.
One thoughtful gift Joel bought me was a new grooming box. My old one was completely destroyed. I already had the brushes and everything else, so it was just the box that needed replacing.
That’s where I’d start with Christmas gifts for horse riders: notice what they actually need. You don’t have to know every detail of their horse’s wardrobe. A favourite colour, an animal they love or a piece of everyday kit that’s falling apart can give you a much better starting point.
Three things to find out first
- What do they use? Look for a worn-out favourite or ask what would make their yard day easier.
- What do they like? Colours and animals are useful clues when choosing socks.
- Does it need to fit? Check shoe size for socks, glove size for gloves, and ask before buying anything that fits the horse.
SECRET SANTA & STOCKING FILLERS · £10–£15
A small gift that feels like them
For a yard Secret Santa, I’d usually think about £10–£15. My first choice would be socks in colours or an animal design I know they like. They don’t have to be Christmas socks. I’d rather give someone a pair they’ll enjoy wearing all year.
Our mint-green Sheep riding socks are one option for a sheep lover, with adult Medium and Large pairs priced at £13.95. Or browse the everyday riding range for a design that suits their taste. If they love a festive pair, choose one because you know they’ll enjoy it.
Watch the whole budget. A £13.95 pair is £16.65 with our £2.70 UK Tracked 48 postage for a one-pair order, before optional wrapping. If £15 is a firm total, leave room for delivery.
INSTRUCTOR THANK-YOU · UP TO £20
Useful, personal and uncomplicated
I’d think about spending up to £20 on an instructor thank-you. A pair in their favourite colour is a useful starting point if you know their shoe size.
Another option is EqWax’s No-Rinse Warming Wash, currently £12 for the 250ml bottle, before delivery. I use it for a warm wash-down after riding and after clipping, when I like how clean it gets the coat. It’s a suggestion for someone whose horse-care routine you know, rather than a reason to buy them a product they don’t use.
Follow the current bottle directions for dilution and use.

FOR PARTNERS AND FAMILY
Choose for the job they’ll do
Gloves are a good example of why it helps to know how someone will use a present. I like eGLOVE’s thicker waterproof winter gloves for yard jobs because they’re warm. For riding, I personally prefer a thinner feel, so I use their everyday leather riding gloves through winter. In summer, I use their mesh ones.
The black eQUEST Waterproof Riding & Yard Gloves are currently £31.99, so these are a larger present rather than a £15 Secret Santa suggestion. At our October check, only XL and XXL were available in black. Check the recipient’s size and current availability before choosing.
If you’re buying for riding rather than yard jobs, ask which gloves they already like and browse eGLOVE’s leather range. My preference for thinner gloves is personal, rather than a rule that every rider will share.
The people behind eGLOVE and EqWax are friends. These are products I use and like; these recommendations aren’t paid, gifted or affiliate placements.
A GIFT OF TIME
Give them a morning off
Offering to do a friend’s yard jobs so they can have a morning off is a thoughtful gift too. Agree the date, the jobs and their horse’s usual routine with them first, and only take on what you’re confident doing.
You could write the offer in a card: “One morning’s yard jobs, on a date we agree.” It’s something to look forward to without adding another thing to the tack room.
A little something for the horse?
Rebel gets a can of Guinness on Christmas Day. It’s one of our little traditions, rather than a present I’d buy for somebody else’s horse without asking.
If you’d like to include their horse in the giving, ask the owner what fits their usual diet. Beer isn’t a general feeding recommendation; check with your vet or an equine nutritionist before introducing it to your own horse.
Buying riding socks as a surprise?
Find out their UK shoe size first, then choose their favourite colours or animals. Medium is UK 4–7 and Large is UK 7–11 on our Sheep socks. UK 7 overlaps, so ask us for fit advice if you’re unsure. Always check the size information on the particular pair you’re buying.
Use our size guide and, if you need help choosing a range for their boots, our sock finder.
What I’d check before buying
I’d avoid choosing tack or anything that needs to fit the horse as a surprise unless I’d checked with the rider first. People can be quite particular about what they use. Asking which item they want can still leave the colour, wrapping and giving as the surprise.
Wrapping and delivery
Our plastic-free gift wrapping is £2.50. Add your socks to the basket, then choose “Add” beside Gift Wrapping under the item. A £13.95 pair with wrapping and £2.70 UK Tracked 48 postage comes to £19.15.
Check our delivery and returns information before ordering, particularly if you’ll be giving the present later. We currently dispatch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Christmas order deadlines will need checking nearer the time; don’t rely on last year’s dates.
EqWax and eGLOVE orders are placed separately with those businesses, with their own delivery charges and returns terms. All prices here are item prices unless we’ve shown a delivered total.
Start with their favourites
A replacement for something worn out, socks in an animal they love, or a morning with the yard jobs covered. The detail that makes it thoughtful is knowing the person you’re buying for.
