Pony Club camp packing list: rider, pony and overnight essentials
Start with your organiser’s kit list, then pack for three things: the rider, the pony and, if needed, an overnight stay. A fresh pair of socks for each day, a couple of spares and a change of clothes are worth making room for.
I went to Pony Club camp as a child. My practical advice is to label everything and pack things in separate bags, so your child can find what they need themselves.
Open the printable Pony Club camp checklist (one-page PDF). Download or print it from the PDF viewer, and use just the sections you need.
Before you start packing
Check what your branch or centre provides, which activities are planned, and the current requirements for hats, body protectors and clothing. Camps differ: one may provide bedding and tools, while another asks you to bring them. Your organiser’s list takes priority.
Confirm meals, medication arrangements, arrival checks and what your child needs to bring each day. If you’re using a centre’s pony, ask which pony-kit items are supplied.
Rider essentials for day camp
- Riding hat and any required body protector, checked against the organiser’s current activity rules and tagging requirements.
- Riding boots, with half chaps if used, and suitable footwear for yard jobs.
- Breeches or jodhpurs, approved riding tops or branch kit, and a spare change of clothes.
- Riding socks: one fresh pair per day, plus two spares.
- Riding gloves, and hair ties or a hairnet as needed.
- A light waterproof and an extra layer for changes in the weather.
- A refillable water bottle, sun cream and a sun hat for time out of the saddle.
- Lunch or snacks if requested, a notebook and pen, and any medication handed over as arranged.
Camp is usually a summer event, so this isn’t about packing for a week of mud. A spare outfit and socks are simply useful if something gets wet or dirty. Choose socks your child already finds comfortable in their riding boots; our children’s riding socks and size guide are there if you need to check options.
Pony kit: check what is provided
- Passport and vaccination records as requested for arrival checks.
- The pony’s usual checked saddle, girth and bridle, plus saddlecloths and a spare dry one if useful.
- Headcollar, lead rope, grooming kit and hoof pick.
- Tack-cleaning and wash-down kit.
- Labelled water and feed buckets; usual feed, forage and measures agreed with the organiser.
- Haynets, bedding and mucking-out tools where requested.
- Rugs and fly kit suited to the conditions, plus the pony’s usual boots or protection if needed.
Check quantities with the organiser rather than guessing how much feed, forage or bedding to take. The downloadable sheet leaves these items conditional, so you can match it to your camp.
Overnight kit: only if they’re staying
- Sleeping bag or bedding, pillow and a camp bed or sleeping mat as required.
- Tent or other accommodation equipment if requested.
- Pyjamas, underwear and clothes for time off the yard.
- Toiletries and a towel.
- A torch and any permitted charging equipment.
- Plate, bowl, mug and cutlery if the organiser asks for them.
Check the sleeping arrangements before packing bulky items. There’s no need to take the overnight section for a day camp.
Make the bags easy for your child to manage
Label clothing, socks, boots, bags and pony equipment. Keep riding kit, spare clothes and overnight things in separate labelled bags, with a bag for used clothes too.
Pack with your child so they know where everything is. Keep the checklist for packing up at the end as well as getting ready to leave.
A small note for Pony Club teams
For teams who’d like matching socks, we can discuss bespoke designs using club colours and a logo. Send your ideas, quantities and event date through our bespoke socks enquiry form, and we’ll confirm the options and timing.
