Riding sock sizes: should you choose Medium or Large?

“Should I choose Medium or Large?” is one of the questions we hear most, especially from people buying riding socks as a gift. Start with UK shoe size, then think about calf width and the design you’ve chosen.

Medium or Large: where to start

  • Medium: UK shoe sizes 4–7.
  • Large: UK shoe sizes 7–11.

There’s an overlap at size 7, so the number on its own doesn’t always settle it. If you wear a UK size 6 or 7 and have a wider calf, I’d usually suggest Large. Check the size guide and the size options on your chosen pair before ordering.

For reference, I’m a UK shoe size 8 and wear Large.

A little more stretch through the leg

Some designs have more stretch than others. If you want more give around your calf, our competition socks are the ones I’d suggest. They don’t have a knitted pattern through the leg, which gives them more stretch and a comfortable feel on a wider calf.

With patterned socks, the amount of stretch can vary between designs. If you’ve spotted a pair you love but aren’t sure about the fit, ask us and tell us your shoe size and whether you need more room around the calf. We can help you choose.

Three simple signs of a good fit

When I try on socks, these are the things I look for:

  • The heel sits in the right place.
  • They feel comfortable around my calf without digging in.
  • They stay up.

Try them with the boots you’ll wear for riding too, so you can check how the whole combination feels.

Buying riding socks for someone else?

If you can, find out their shoe size first. Medium is my usual starting point for a women’s gift if there’s no other information, while taller women may need Large. Height is only a clue, though, so checking their shoe size is much more useful than guessing.

If they’re a size 6 or 7, it also helps to know whether they prefer more room around the calf. You don’t need to make it complicated: their shoe size, a little idea of leg fit and the design they like are enough to start the conversation.

Check your size, or browse competition socks if you’re looking for more stretch through the leg.
