Autumn yard essentials: the kit I actually use

Waterproof gloves, comfortable wellies, warm socks, hi-vis and a good hand moisturiser. Those are the things I start reaching for again when autumn arrives. Here’s what I use, and why.

Waterproof gloves for yard jobs

My thicker waterproof eGLOVE gloves are one of the first things I reach for when it gets colder. I like them for keeping my hands warm while I’m doing yard jobs.

Riding is different. I still prefer a thinner feel on the reins, so I don’t necessarily want the same gloves for both.

You can browse eGLOVE’s waterproof range and check the fit and available sizes there.

Good wellies, with socks that stay put

For yard jobs, I want wellies that keep my feet dry and feel comfortable to work in. I’m keeping the brand out of this one: a pair that works for your feet is what matters.

I usually wear our everyday riding socks with mine. I like the padded foot, they keep my feet comfortable and warm, and they stay put inside the boot.

On office days, I’ll also wear our short socks in my wellies. They stay comfortably in place for me too.

If you’re unsure which size to choose, our riding sock fit guide explains where to start.

Hi-vis for hacking

I usually wear a hi-vis jacket or tabard when I’m hacking. I’ve recently discovered versions with lights, and I think they’re a game changer.

The British Horse Society’s hi-vis guidance recommends hi-vis and lights for riding out throughout the year, with suitable kit for both horse and rider. Lights don’t make it advisable to head out at night or in poor visibility.

Bright socks can add a bit of colour to your kit, but they’re an extra. They don’t replace proper hi-vis.

A good hand moisturiser

Cold weather and yard jobs can leave my hands feeling dry, so a good moisturiser belongs on this list too. I don’t have a particular brand to recommend here, just something you like using on dry hands.

That’s my autumn list: a few useful things that make yard jobs and getting out riding more comfortable.
